Brendel Receives May Ram Pride Award
By Nadine Miller The Greene Central Ram Pride Award for the month of May was presented to Jean Brendel from History teacher Hannah Covey at the staff meeting on Monday, May 7th in the media center. The Ram Pride award was started in the spring of 2002 and is given monthly to a teacher of a faculty member who shows dedication and hard work at Greene Central High School. During the next faculty meeting, the teacher who previously received the award nominated and presents the award to a teacher who they believe has gone the extra mile to show the qualities of an outstanding staff member. Brendel teaches Parenting and Child Development and Early Childhood Education I and II. She has been teaching at Greene Central for three years and is also the vice president of the local North Carolina Association of Educators, advisor for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (F.C.C.L.A.), and she also coached boys’ junior varsity tennis. “I was truly honored to be selected and to receive the Ram Pride Award,” Brendel said. “My favorite thing about teaching is helping a student achieve his or her goals and knowing that I make a difference in their lives.” “I gave the award to her because I feel like she is a dedicated teacher who has a lot of passion for her students,” said Covey. “She revamped the F.C.C.L.A. and made it into a club that participates in state competitions as well as community service, like Relay for Life.” Brendel and Covey did not know each other prior to their teaching careers at Greene Central, but they both started working here at the same time. “I heard great things about the school,” Brendel said. “When I was interviewed and walked around the school, I felt this was the place I belonged.” Brendel has always wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a kid, and she admits she went down a different path in life for a while. “I eventually became a teacher and have not regretted a moment of the decision,” Brendel said. “I believe if something is meant to be, then a way will be provided.” In her spare time she enjoys playing tennis, sewing, which includes quilting, and reading a great novel. “I love reading books that have to do with the legal system, fiction and non-fiction,” Brendel said. She also enjoys shopping in unique and unusual places and looking around quilt shops. Brendel’s plans for the future are to obtain her National Board Certification and a PhD. “You can not change what happened yesterday, but you can make a difference today, based on your experiences in life,” Brendel said is her best advice for students. “Live the moment because before you realize it, life has gone on.” “People should enjoy their family now and forget the little things that can be done tomorrow, for one day your family will not be there,” Brendel said.
