Greene Central Receives Bronze Medal

Greene Central Receives Bronze MedalBy Miguel Cruz                Greene Central High School recently received the Bronze Medal Award rating from U.S. News and World Report based on its academic success and proficiency.             Three steps were taken in order to determine whether a school classified for an award along with criteria for the gold, silver, and bronze medals. These all looked at how the school performed overall and how the students performed academically.            The first step in ranking schools was whether each school’s students were doing better than the average student in the state. They looked at math scores and reading scores and how well above average they performed.            The second step out of the three step process was if the minorities or least advantaged students in school were performing better than similar students in the state. They compared the school’s least advantaged student’s math and reading results to the average least advantaged student in the state.            The third and final step was for schools that had passed through the first two steps. They were judged nationally to see which schools had the best College Readiness Index. The College Readiness Index is how many seniors took an Advanced Placement class their senior year and how well they performed on the Advanced Placement exam; the schools that had the best college readiness index became eligible for a gold medal.            Superintendent Dr. Steve Mazingo and principal Dr. Bledsoe were very proud of the accomplishment. Mazingo said, “Greene Central offers all of its students an opportunity to receive a 21st century education and a chance to go to college. The innovative programs at GCHS such as iTech and College for Everyone set Greene Central apart from other high schools in the nation. The award is certainly well deserved.”            Dr.Bledsoe said, “Receiving the Bronze Medal Award from the U.S. News and World Report reflects the dedication of this staff to teaching and encouraging academic excellence for all of the students at Greene Central High School. This award also represents the efforts of our county administrators and board members in providing the best programs, resources, and technologies that enhance student learning. We expect all students to be prepared for college and the 21st century workforce.”            Yolanda Williams, science teacher, at Greene Central said, “I think that its great that GCHS is recognized nationally. Greene Central has a lot to offer to students at GC. There are a lot of opportunities, and some students take advantage of them.”            Sophomore Jonathan Nethercutt stated, “I feel that it is a great honor for our school to receive such an award. To be recognized as one of top schools in our nation is not an easy thing to achieve. All the students, teachers, and staff should be proud of themselves because they are the ones truly responsibly for the achievement.”            Overall, 18,790 schools were analyzed and judged for the bronze medal award, and only 1,086 were given the bronze medal award. Twenty-eight other schools were also given the bronze medal award in North Carolina, including Kinston High School and West Craven High School.
